THE STATE NEWSPAPER

Columbia, South Carolina

I am a higher education and K-12 education reporter for The State. My beat was initially molded around the University of South Carolina. I have taken on the additional responsibility of covering our K-12 schools, including two of the largest districts in South Carolina, as well as statewide education policy. I am also a weekend breaking news reporter. I keep a pulse on what matters to our community members and readers, and prioritize doing work that keep university and education officials accountable. Along with writing daily and enterprise stories, I have also been involved with engagement efforts like hosting an educators' round table; an experimental education news sprint focused on hyper-local, quick-turn reporting; and managed the newspaper's first ever collaboration with The Daily Gamecock, the student newsroom at USC. To read more of my work for The State, click here.

O'BRIEN FELLOWSHIP IN PUBLIC SERVICE JOURNALISM

Milwaukee, Wisconsin

I was a reporting intern and student researcher with the O'Brien Fellowship during reporter Guy Boulton's tenure as a 2021-2022 fellow exploring the impacts of the social determinants of health — housing, food, transportation, etc. — on the residents of Milwaukee, and the disconnect between spending on health care and social services. I contributed to the final project titled "A New Prescription," which earned national awards from the National Headliner Awards, the Society of Professional Journalists and the Association of Health Care Journalists. I also independently reported on the dwindling number of parish nurses in Milwaukee as a part of the series.

The U.S. embraces personal responsibility. But is our emphasis on health care over social services the result of blaming those in need?

The U.S. pours money into health care, then holds back on social services. But those services often can do more to improve health
